Attenuated early pregnancy weight gain by prenatal lifestyle interventions does not prevent gestational diabetes in the LIFE-Moms consortium

Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Nov 25, 2020

Redman LM, Drews KL, Klein S, et al. - Researchers aimed at determining how lifestyle (diet and physical activity) interventions affect the prevalence of GDM, considering the method of GDM ascertainment and its correlation with early pregnancy characteristics and maternal and neonatal outcomes in the LIFE-Moms consortium. In LIFE-Moms, the effects of lifestyle interventions to optimize gestational weight gain were examined in 1,148 pregnant women with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m 2 and without known diabetes at enrollment, compared with standard care. Per findings, the prevalence of GDM did not change in correlation with implementation of moderate-to-high intensity lifestyle interventions grounded in behavior change theory initiated between 9-16-weeks gestation despite a reduction noted in early GWG.
