Prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease among pediatric patients with hidradenitis suppurativa and the potential role of screening with fecal calprotectin

Pediatric Dermatology Oct 28, 2020

Lloyd‐McLennan AM, Ali S, Kittler NW., et al. - Among pediatric patients with hidradenitis suppurativa (HS), researchers performed this retrospective chart review to evaluate the prevalence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), to describe the IBD phenotype among pediatric patients with HS, and to characterize the use of fecal calprotectin (FC) as a screening tool for IBD in this population. This investigation was carried at a single academic children's hospital. The sample consisted of 109 patients ≤ 18 years old diagnosed with HS between 2013 and 2018, 6 of whom were diagnosed with IBD. An increased prevalence of IBD may be associated with pediatric HS, indicating that more widespread screening for IBD may be suggested. FC is used infrequently but can be a useful method for screening. FC was elevated in all patients with IBD with an FC level. Of those with elevated FC, 80.0% had IBD.
