Impact of low-dose CT screening for lung cancer on ethnic health inequities in New Zealand: A cost-effectiveness analysis

McLeod M, Sandiford P, Kvizhinadze G, et al. - Since large disparities are evident in the lung cancer burden for the Indigenous Māori population of New Zealand, researchers evaluated a national low-dose CT (LDCT) screening programme for lung cancer among smokers aged 55–74 years with a 30 pack-year history, as well as for former smokers who stopped smoking within the last 15 years, focusing on the potential lifetime health gains, equity effects, and cost-effectiveness. For this purpose, they employed a Markov macrosimulation model. They compared biennial LDCT screening for lung cancer vs usual care. Findings showed the likely cost-effectiveness of a national biennial LDCT lung cancer screening programme in New Zealand. Furthermore, this screening programme was concluded to afford an improvement of total population health and attenuation in health disparities for Māori. Ethnic disparities in stage-specific lung cancer survival needs to be addressed.
