Feral-Pierssens AL, Toury G, Sehimi F, et al. - Since data regarding elderly patients visiting Emergency Departments (EDs) assisted by home services are lacking, therefore, researchers undertook this multicenter, prospective cohort study to compare emergency resources’ use and patients’ outcome among elderly patients visiting ED those assisted by professional home services vs those who did not. This study was conducted in 124 French EDs during a 24-h period on March 2016. Participants were consecutive patients residing at home aged ≥ 80 years. In-hospital death was the primary endpoint. As per findings, no lower in-hospital mortality or no increased admission rate was reported in relation to professional home services which help one-third of elderly patients visiting EDs. A lower risk of being admitted for «having difficulties coping at home» was noted in relation to assisted patients. Some admissions as well as their corollary complications could be avoided via professional home services.
