Multimodal analgesia after thyroid or parathyroid surgery: A randomized controlled trial

Surgery Sep 25, 2020

Arenas MAR, Uhlmann RA, Postevka E, et al. - Researchers undertook this randomized controlled trial to compare analgesic regimens following thyroidectomy and/or parathyroidectomy, to ultimately show noninferiority of a staged analgesic regimen post-endocrine surgery. Adult patients (≥ 18 years) were randomly assigned to as-needed acetaminophen + codeine [study arm (A) ] or scheduled acetaminophen/as-needed tramadol [arm B]. In a study log, pain scores and analgesics consumed were documented. Findings showed that post-endocrine surgery, moderate pain scores with low needs for analgesics were observed among patients. Results also demonstrated the noninferiority of the staged analgesic regimen to combination opioids, and reduced overall consumption was reported in relation to staged analgesic regimen.
