Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice Sep 19, 2020

Gandhi SK, Waschbusch M, Michael M, et al. - This study was undertaken to evaluate age- and gender-specific incidence rates (IRs) of non-traumatic lower-limb amputations (LLA) in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) using a claims database from the United States (US). Between January 1, 2007 and September 30, 2018, individuals with T2DM 18 years and older were distinguished applying the Truven Health MarketScan database. Researchers estimated overall and age- and gender-specific IRs of all non-traumatic LLA, minor LLA (amputation at or below the ankle), and major LLA (amputation above ankle). A total of 6,117,981 patients with T2DM were included in the study. This research distinguished males and older patients with T2DM at a higher risk of developing LLA in the US required further exploration of risk factors of LLA in these subgroups.
