Seiglie J, Platt J, Cromer SJ, et al. - Researchers analyzed a cohort of patients hospitalized with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in order to investigate whether diabetes represent a risk factor for poor early outcomes, following adjustment for obesity. Data were obtained from the Massachusetts General Hospital COVID-19 Data Registry. There were 450 patients. Diabetes, mostly type 2 diabetes, was present in 178 (39.6%). Greater odds of ICU admission, mechanical ventilation, and death at 14 days were observed in relation to diabetes in multivariable logistic regression models. Overall, findings demonstrated a link of diabetes with poor early outcomes, following adjustment for obesity, in hospitalized patients with COVID-19. For persons with diabetes at risk for COVID-19, patient-centered care decision making can be informed by these observations.
