Plasma cadmium is associated with increased risk of long-term kidney graft failure
Kidney International Sep 18, 2020
Sotomayor CG, Groothof D, Vodegel JJ, et al. - Whether nephrotoxic exposure to cadmium is an overlooked hazard for optimal graft function in kidney transplant recipients was investigated in this prospective cohort analysis of 672 outpatient kidney transplant recipients with a functioning graft of beyond one year. The median plasma cadmium was noted to be 58 ng/L. A median 4.9 years of follow-up was performed, during which, graft failure development was reported in 78 kidney transplant recipients, with a significantly different distribution across tertiles of plasma cadmium. Findings demonstrated an independent link of plasma cadmium with a raised risk of long-term kidney graft failure and decline in kidney function.
