Janeway MG, Sanchez SE, Chen Q, et al. - Via performing a cohort study using data from the State Ambulatory Surgery and Services Databases of the Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project, researchers sought to determine if patient race, health insurance status, and household income are associated with the location (ASC vs hospital-based outpatient department) of ambulatory surgery. This cohort study was performed including 13 million patients who received ambulatory surgery in New York and Florida from 2011 to 2013. Findings suggest that patients who were Black, had public health insurance, and resided in rural areas significantly less frequently receive surgery at a freestanding ambulatory surgery center compared with a hospital-based outpatient department.
