Clinicopathological characteristics of lung cancer in patients with systemic sclerosis

The Clinical Respiratory Journal Sep 11, 2020

Chen M, Liu X, Xu Y, et al. - Researchers assessed the demographics as well as clinicopathological features of lung cancer (LC) patients with systemic sclerosis (SSc). Participants were recruited from Peking Union Medical College Hospital. This study involved 12 female lung cancer patients with SSc. There was no history of smoking among the participants. Adenocarcinoma was the most common histological type, followed by squamous cell carcinoma and small‐cell carcinoma. Interstitial lung disease (ILD) was detected in eight patients. Surgical resection was performed on four (33.3%) patients. Chemotherapy was received by eight (66.7%) patients. Only one (8.3%) patient was treated with radiotherapy. There were no grade 3/4 adverse events. Unlike what is ususaaly seen in patients with general lung cancer, most of these patients are female. The presence of SSc‐ILD, including nonspecific interstitial pneumonia and usual interstitial pneumonia, was evident in a high proportion of patients. In carefully selected patients suffering from ILD, surgery or radiotherapy could still be considered.
