Martin-Villares C, Molina-Ramirez CP, Bartolome-Benito M, et al. - Researchers performed this multicentric prospective observational study to assess the outcomes of tracheostomy on intubated COVID-19 patients. This is the largest cohort of COVID-19 sufferers undergoing tracheostomy. This investigation was conducted on 1,890 COVID-19 patients undergoing tracheostomy across 120 hospitals over 7 weeks in Spain (March 28 to May 15, 2020). Data were obtained with an innovative approach: instant messaging via WhatsApp. One thousand four hundred sixty-one surgical (81.3%) and 429 percutaneous tracheostomies were performed. The main emphasis is the unprecedented amount of tracheostomies: 1890 in 7 weeks. Weaning could be achieved in more than half of the follow-up patients. Nearly one in four tracheotomized patients died of COVID-19.
