Dietary intake of total, animal, and plant proteins and risk of all cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality: Systematic review and dose-response meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies

Naghshi S, Sadeghi O, Willett WC, et al. - Researchers evaluated the possible dose-response correlation between consumption of total, animal, and plant protein and the risk of death from all causes, cardiovascular disease, and cancer. For this purpose, they identified prospective cohort investigations with adults aged 18 or older documenting the risk estimates for all cause, cardiovascular, and cancer mortality in PubMed, Scopus, and ISI Web of Science, and the references of retrieved relevant articles. The systematic review included 32 studies and the meta-analysis included 31 studies. Findings revealed a lower risk of all cause mortality in correlation with higher consumption of total protein; a lower risk of all cause and cardiovascular disease mortality correlated with intake of plant protein. Longevity could be improved by substituting foods high in animal protein with plant protein sources.
