Recurrent pleomorphic adenoma of the parotid gland: A comparison of radiographic and pathologic tumor burden

American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Jul 13, 2020

Rooker SA, Nagelschneider AA, Moore EJ, et al. - By identifying 44 individuals at a tertiary medical center between 2000 and 2015, researchers sought to compare recurrent pleomorphic adenoma tumor burden with postoperative histopathology as observed on magnetic resonance and computerized tomography (CT) imaging. Patients were considered if they had viewable preoperative imaging and a persistent pleomorphic adenoma diagnosis postoperatively. Through imaging, the size of the largest pathology lesion can be precisely calculated. CT scans significantly under-predict the number of lesions found on the pathology compared with MRI scans. Unless there are contraindications, priority should be given to MRI. Such findings will help guide the choice of imaging, preoperative planning, and counseling of patients.
