Effectiveness of sequential psychological and medication therapies for insomnia disorder: A randomized clinical trial

JAMA Jul 13, 2020

Morin CM, Edinger JD, Beaulieu-Bonneau S, et al. - Among 211 adults (132 women; mean [SD] age, 45.6 [14.9] years) with an insomnia disorder, 74 of them with a comorbid anxiety or mood disorder, researchers conducted this randomized clinical trial to compare the effectiveness of four psychological- and medication-based treatment sequences for insomnia and analyze how psychiatric disorders moderated insomnia outcomes. The study was performed at Institut Universitaire en Santé Mentale de Québec, Université Laval, Québec City, Québec, Canada, and at National Jewish Health, Denver, Colorado. Patient enrollment occurred from August 2012 until July 2017. According to findings, behavioral therapy and zolpidem offered an equitable response rate and rate of remission. For patients whose insomnia wasn't resolved with initial therapies, the addition of a second treatment offered an additional value.
