Effect of laryngeal mask airway insertion on intraocular pressure response: Systematic review and meta-analysis

Anesthesiology Research and Practice Jul 13, 2020

Obsa MS, kanche ZZ, Fite RO, et al. - This study was designed to afford the best possible evidence on the intraocular pressure response to endotracheal tube intubation and laryngeal mask airway insertion. For this purpose, electronic databases were searched to identify all original peer-reviewed papers which described the mean as well as standard deviation of intraocular pressure prior to and following airway instrumentation in both groups. Reviewed research papers were 47 in total, of which, six studies were analyzed in this systematic review and meta-analysis. The overall pooled standard mean difference of intraocular pressure was estimated to be 1.30. Based on the available data, it was clear that the laryngeal mask airway affords lesser intraocular pressure response than the conventional tracheal tube.
