Intratympanic steroid injection for sudden sensorineural hearing loss: Impact of injection interval on therapeutic efficacy

Auris Nasus Larynx Jul 10, 2020

Kwak MY, Yang CJ, Shim HJ, et al. - In patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSNHL), researchers compared the impact of injection time intervals of intratympanic (IT) dexamethasone (DEX). According to the IT DEX interval, 75 adults with ISSNHL were grouped into four groups. Patients received IT DEX injections every 1, 2, 3, and four days, respectively, in addition to concurrent oral steroid medication for two weeks. No significant differences were found in demographic and baseline audiometric data. A statistically significant difference between the group with a daily injection interval and the group with a four-day time interval was found in the complete hearing recovery rate and the audiometric results (pure tone audiometry). Daily time intervals in intratympanic steroid injection can, therefore, be considered as an option for better hearing improvement in ISSNHL patients.
