Pulmonary artery to ascending aorta ratio by echocardiography: A strong predictor for presence and severity of pulmonary hypertension
PLoS Neglected Tropical Diseases Jul 10, 2020
Schneider M, Ran H, Pistritto AM, et al. - Researchers performed this post-hoc analysis to assess the feasibility to image the pulmonary trunk in a prospective cohort as well as they determined whether PA:A [pulmonary artery (PA) to ascending aorta diameter ratio] derived by transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) enables the prediction of pulmonary hypertension (PH). Overall 84 patients were analyzed, with a median age of 70.5 years, and 46 (55%) were female. Findings revealed that it was possible to visualize PA, especially when it was dilated, in almost all echocardiographic exams. Experts recommended the inclusion of a view showing the pulmonary trunk in every routine TTE. A raised PA:A should increase suspicion for PH and prompt further assessment as well as follow-up examinations of these patients.
