Maduka RC, Gibson CE, Chiu AS, et al. - In the present study, the researchers tested the assumption that minority groups have a higher incidence of postoperative complications following surgery for benign thyroid disease. Using NSQIP (2016–2017), patients (>17 years) undergoing thyroid surgery for benign disease have been identified. Neck hematoma, recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury, and hypocalcemia were outcomes included. Six thousand eight hundred seventeen patients have been identified. Postoperative outcomes included neck hematoma, RLN injury, and significant hypocalcemia. Black patients had a higher chance of neck hematoma and RLN injury compared with White patients while Asian patients had significantly higher chances of RLN injury. Minority vs White patients are more likely to have significant postoperative complications indicating racial disparities in benign thyroid disease surgical treatment.
