Zeng L, Xia S, Yuan W, et al. - Via this cohort study, researchers sought to report on early-onset infection among neonates born to mothers with COVID-19 from Wuhan Children's Hospital, in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. They identified 33 neonates born to mothers with COVID-19, including 3 neonates with COVID-19. In line with previous studies, the 33 neonates with or at risk of COVID-19 had mild clinical symptoms and exhibited favorable outcomes. Symptoms may be due to prematurity, asphyxia, and sepsis, rather than SARS-CoV-2 infection in the most seriously ill neonate among the 3 neonates with symptomatic COVID-19. Because of implementation of strict infection control and prevention measures during the delivery, the sources of SARS-CoV-2 in the neonates’ upper respiratory tracts or anuses seem to be of maternal origin.
