Interventions for actinic keratosis in non-scalp and non-face localizations: Results from a systematic review with network meta-analysis
Journal of Investigative Dermatology Jul 09, 2020
Steeb T, Wessely A, Schmitz L, et al. - Since there are myriad interventions available to treat actinic keratoses (AK) on the face or scalp, however, lesions outside the head and neck have received little attention so far, researchers sought to synthesize the current knowledge of AK interventions in non-scalp and non-face localizations. Thirteen randomized controlled trials with 1,380 individuals were included in a systematic review. In a frequentist meta-analysis network (NMA), five treatment modalities, including cryosurgery, ingenol mebutate, photodynamic therapy, colchicine, and 5-fluorouracil, were evaluated and compared with placebo. Ingenol mebutate showed the highest participant partial clearance rates compared with the placebo. There was inadequate documentation of the mean lesion reduction and incidence of adverse events. The evidence's certainty differed from very low to high and was limited by imprecision and study limitations.
