Association of sleep duration with stroke, myocardial infarction, and tumors in a Chinese population with metabolic syndrome: A retrospective study

Lipids in Health and Disease Jul 01, 2020

Ye Y, Zhang L, Wang A, et al. - Researchers explored the link of sleep duration with stroke, myocardial infarction (MI) and tumors among persons with metabolic syndrome (MetS) in this retrospective study. Recruited participants were 8,968 (2,754 with MetS at baseline). Using multivariate logistic regressions, the links between sleep duration and outcome events in different sleep duration groups (< 6 h, 6–7 h, 7–8 h [reference], 8–9 h, and > 9 h per day) were assessed among participants. Findings revealed a significantly increased risk of stroke, but not of MI and tumors, in correlation with long sleep duration (> 9 h) vs 7–8 h of sleep duration in participants with MetS. No link of short sleep duration (< 6 h) with increased risk of stroke, MI and tumors was evident among people with MetS.
