Prevalence, treatment, control of type 2 diabetes and the risk factors among elderly people in Shenzhen: Results from the urban Chinese population

BMC Public Health Jul 01, 2020

Sun Y, Ni W, Yuan X, et al. - In Chinese urban population aged 65 years or older, this inquiry was undertaken to determine the prevalence, treatment, and control rate of type 2 diabetes as well as associated risk factors in this population. Researchers found that diabetes was present in about 22.5% of elderly urban Chinese residents, and medical treatment was received by 54.8% of those with diabetes. Glycemic control was achieved in only 34.4% of those who received the treatment. The prevalence of T2D was shown to rise with increasing age prior to 80 years old, male, inadequate active physical activity, drinking, prior history of cardiovascular disease, higher BMI, central obesity, and hypertension. Overall, based on these data, experts suggest paying attention to the prophylaxis as well as control of T2D in Chinese urban elderly population. Effective strategies focused at improving health care management of T2D in elderly adults should be planned by the health policy department.
