Leisure time physical activity and depressive symptoms among adolescents in Sweden

BMC Public Health Jul 01, 2020

Ma L, et al. - Researchers used binary logistic regression to determine the link between leisure time physical activity and depressive symptoms among adolescents in Sweden. They studied Swedish data obtained as part of the Children of Immigrants: Longitudinal Survey in Four European Countries. Overall 3,787 adolescents (including 1,855 boys and 1,932 girls) participated. Among adolescents in Sweden, findings revealed a lower level of depressive symptoms in correlation with participation in physical activity regularly during leisure time. Conclusions regarding causality could not be drawn due to the cross-sectional study design. Based on these results, recognition of the worth of physical activity in promoting mental health among adolescents is necessary.
