Prediction of deep vein thrombosis by ultrasonography and D-dimer in Asian patients with ischemic stroke

BMC Neurology Jul 01, 2020

Ha, SH Kim YJ, Heo SH, et al. - This research was undertaken to evaluate the incidence and factors correlated with deep vein thrombosis (DVT) in Asian patients with ischemic stroke. Researchers compared clinical characteristics and laboratory results, including D-dimer level, between patients with and without DVT. The multivariable analysis was applied to evaluate independent risk factors for DVT. Performing a similar analysis, factors correlated with elevated D-dimer level (> 0.5 mg/dl) in acute ischemic stroke patients were distinguished. The evidence suggested that in Asian ischemic stroke patients, the severity of the ischemic stroke, but not the D-dimer level, was correlated with the presence of DVT. Via the stroke mechanism, D-dimer level was influenced. It was considered that lower extremity ultrasonography in patients with severe neurological deficit, rather than screening with D-dimer, may be more beneficial for diagnosing DVT in Asian patients with acute ischemic stroke.
