Tear film characteristics during wear of daily disposable contact lenses
Clinical Ophthalmology Jun 28, 2020
Montani G, et al. - In this prospective open-label unmasked non-randomized simultaneous comparative cross-over study involving 46 individuals, researchers sought to assess changes induced over time by three daily disposable contact lenses on tear meniscus height, pre-lens non-invasive break-up time (pre-lens NIBUT), tear film osmolarity (TO) and objective quality of vision. With all the lenses, pre-lens NIBUT was significantly reduced, while no significant TO change was observed with any lens. Stability index and fluctuation index increased significantly for all lenses at both wear times. Although the presence of any contact lens on the eye threatens the tear film, nesofilcon A contact lenses have shown a lower overall effect despite their high water content compared with delefilcon A and stenfilcon A contact lenses. The authors speculate that superior tear film behavior may translate into improved subjective comfort while wearing nesofilcon A lenses but this remains to be assessed.
