Hospitalization and mortality following non-attendance for hemodialysis according to dialysis day of the week: A European cohort study
BMC Nephrology Jun 16, 2020
Fotheringham J, Smith MT, Froissart M, et al. - Given that the extension of the interdialytic interval because of dialysis session non-attendance differs based on which session of the week the patient misses, so, to determine the effect of this on subsequent hospitalization as well as mortality, researchers performed this study. Data from hemodialysis patients across 15 European countries were prospectively gathered in the ARO (Analyzing Data, Recognizing Excellence and Optimizing Outcomes) cohort study. Experts computed event rates for mortality as well as hospitalisation based on dialysis day of the week for patients who attended the three prior scheduled hemodialysis sessions, who then on the next scheduled dialysis day either attended or did not attend. Besides the increases in hospitalisation as well as death seen following the two-day break, additional harm may be manifested in the greater rises in death as well as hospitalisation noted following non-attendance for the first hemodialysis session after the two-day break vs missing other sessions.
