Comparison of functional outcomes of cartilage tympanoplasty with silastic sheet vs Gelfoam packing in middle ear

American Journal of Otolaryngology - Head and Neck Medicine and Surgery Jun 14, 2020

Anari MR, Yazdi AM, Kazemi E, et al. - Researchers conducted this block-randomized clinical trial to compare two common packing materials, namely Gelfoam and silastic sheets in cartilage tympanoplasty surgeries. The sample consisted of 78 patients undergoing tympanoplasty in Vali-e-asr hospital in 2017 and 2018 and were randomly assigned to silastic sheet or gelfoam groups. Success was achieved in 32 (82.1%) patients and 34 (87.2%) patients in groups of gelfoam and silastic sheets, respectively. The percentage of the perforation area in Gelfoam group was significantly lower. Overall, the efficacy of Gelfoam and silastic sheet methods in cartilage tympanoplasty was similar. The use of each method depends on the preference of the surgeon and the characteristics of the patients. For more conclusive results, multi-center studies with larger sample sizes are required.
