Utilization of dental services among low and middle income pregnant, post-partum and 6-month post-partum women

BMC Oral Health Apr 24, 2020

Baskaradoss JK, et al. - Researchers examined the utilization pattern of dental services among pregnant, postpartum and 6-month postpartum women via conducting a cross-sectional questionnaire survey at two maternity and child care hospitals in India that primarily cater to middle and low income communities. Analysis of responses of 450 (150 pregnant, 150 post-partum and 150 six-month post-partum) women was done (response rate = 72%). Poor oral and general health was reported in a significantly higher percentage of postpartum women vs both, pregnant and 6-month postpartum women. Dental care was sought by higher percentage of women reporting ‘good’ oral and general health compared with others. After adjusting for all the other variables in the model, regular dental care is less regularly sought by women with lower levels of education, women with poor self-perceived oral health and postpartum women. Outcomes thereby suggest women in this population varies in pattern of dental service utilization according to their pregnancy status, level of education and self-perceived oral health. Routine dental care was least sought by postpartum women compared with pregnant or 6-month postpartum women.
