Lymph-node Epstein–Barr virus concentration in diagnosing cervical lymph-node metastasis in nasopharyngeal carcinoma

Li H, Huang C, Chen Q, et al. - Among 253 nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) patients with 276 cervical lymph-nodes (CLNs), researchers determined the diagnostic importance of Epstein–Barr virus (EBV) concentration for CLNs in NPC. Fifteen individuals (22 lymph nodes) had FNAC, and the remaining 242 patients (254 lymph nodes) had core needle biopsy for CLNs at the clinician’s demand. The MRI results and EBV concentrations in plasma and lymph nodes have been analyzed and recorded. According to receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis,  CLN-EBV concentrations ≥ 787.5 copies/ml were regarded as positive. The sensitivity and specificity for MRI in lymph-node metastasis were 94.09% and 48.72% and for EBV DNA in CLN metastasis were 95.36% and 84.62%. Data reported that the sensitivity and specificity of EBV in plasma, respectively, were 77.2% and 71.8%. Ultrasound-guided CLN FNA can provide a new method for diagnosing CLN metastasis with high sensitivity and specificity to obtain EBV concentrations.
