Does computed tomography scan add any diagnostic value to the evaluation of stab wounds of the anterior abdominal wall? A systematic review and meta- analysis

The Journal of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Apr 03, 2020

Gachabayov M, et al. - Researchers investigated the additive value of computed tomography (CT) scan to diagnostic evaluation of stab wounds of the anterior abdominal wall vs serial clinical examination (SCE) via performing a systematic review and meta-analysis. Two independent researchers systematically searched PubMed, EMBASE, Cochrane Library, and MEDLINE via Ovid from 1980 to 2018 and identified three studies (1 randomized controlled trial and 2 observational studies) totaling 319 patients for inclusion in the meta-analysis. SCE did not differ significantly from CT in overall laparotomy rate (12.8% vs 19%) and in negative laparotomy rate (3.5% vs 5.4%). Level II evidence was gained in this work indicating no additional value of CT scan for these patients.
