Limited sequence MRI to improve standards of care for suspected cauda equina syndrome

The Bone & Joint Journal Apr 03, 2020

Gnanasekaran R, Beresford-Cleary N, Aboelmagd T, et al. - Researchers offer that compression of the cauda equina should be apparent with a limited sequence (LS) scan that takes significantly less time to conduct. A total of 188 individuals with suspected cauda equina syndrome (CES) were included who underwent a LS lumbosacral MRI between the beginning of September 2017 and the end of July 2018. The outcomes imply that a LS lumbosacral MRI could be applied to diagnose CES safely in individuals under the age of 55 years, but that future study is required to assess safety and efficacy of this method before changes to existing protocols can be recommended. In addition, work is required to evaluate whether LS MRIs can be applied throughout the spine and whether alternative pathology is being considered.
