Supervised pulmonary tele-rehabilitation vs pulmonary rehabilitation in severe COPD: A randomised multicentre trial
Thorax Apr 02, 2020
Hansen H, Bieler T, Beyer N, et al. - Researchers undertook this single-blinded, multicentre, superiority randomised controlled trial to determine if pulmonary tele-rehabilitation (PTR) is superior to conventional pulmonary rehabilitation (PR), in terms of 6 min walk distance (6MWD) mainly and respiratory symptoms, quality of life, physical activity and lower limb muscle function (secondarily), in patients with COPD and FEV1 < 50% eligible for routine hospital-based, outpatient PR. The participants were allocated 1:1 to 10 weeks of groups-based PTR (60 min, three times weekly) or conventional PR (90 min, two times weekly). Findings revealed the non-superiority of PTR to conventional PR on the 6MWD and experts identified no differences between groups. They noted that PTR was completed by more participants, therefore, supervised PTR would be relevant to compare with conventional PR in a non-inferiority design.
