Kume A, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for analyzing the epidemiological status of diabetes mellitus (DM)-related complications in Japan. Participants in the study were 3.11 million Japanese people who were registered in the Japanese claim database between 2005 and 2014. In total, 66,923 individuals with DM were involved. Data reported that the prevalence of DM subjects was 3.8% in 2005 and 4.2% in 2014. Diabetic retinopathy was the most frequent complication, followed by diabetic nephropathy and diabetic neuropathy. The frequencies of the ocular and neural complications decreased significantly, while that of renal complications increased significantly during the study period. The most common DM-related major complications in Japan were ocular complications. Notably, diabetic macular edema has increased significantly in recent years.
