Yang LT, Ahn SW, Li Z, et al. - Researchers identified if mitral valve prolapse (MVP) patients with less than moderate mitral regurgitation (MR) showed early cardiac chamber remodeling or factors related to early remodeling and whether early remodeling prognosticated MR progression. They matched a sum of of 253 MVP patients with less than moderate MR to 344 controls (P for age and sex, ≥.18) with less than moderate MR. Left ventricle (LV) and left atrium (LA) remodeling parameters (LV end-diastolic and end-systolic indexed diameters, LA volume-index, and LV mass-index) as well as determinants of remodeling were examined. They further studied last available transthoracic echocardiography to distinguish progression to moderate-severe MR or more. It was noted that individuals with less than moderate MR due to MVP show early LV and LA remodeling, which does not prognosticate MR progression or mortality. Associations were found between left ventricle remodeling and MVP, female gender, and presence of premature ventricular contractions (PVCs). The data indicates that early chamber remodeling correlated with MVP may be the phenotypical expression of a genetically mediated process and is at least partially related to PVCs.
