Neonatal early-onset infection with SARS-CoV-2 in 33 neonates born to mothers with COVID-19 in Wuhan, China

Zeng L, Xia S, Yuan W, et al. - Researchers conducted a cohort study including all neonates born to mothers with COVID-19 from Wuhan Children's Hospital, in Wuhan, Hubei Province, China. They identified 33 neonates born to mothers with COVID-19; of these, 3 neonates were diagnosed with COVID-19. Given the implementation of strict infection control and prevention procedures during the delivery, the sources of SARS-CoV-2 in the neonates’ upper respiratory tracts or anuses may be of maternal in origin. Despite 2 recent studies demonstrating no clinical findings or investigations suggestive of COVID-19 in neonates born to affected mothers, and all samples, including amniotic fluid, cord blood, and breast milk, as negative for SARS-CoV-2, the current study cannot rule out the vertical maternal-fetal transmission. Hence, they emphasize screening pregnant women and implementing strict infection control measures, quarantine of infected mothers, and close monitoring of neonates at risk of COVID-19. In line with previous studies, the clinical symptoms were mild and outcomes were favorable in 33 neonates with or at risk of COVID-19.
