Diagnosis of the coronavirus disease (COVID-19): rRT-PCR or CT

European Journal of Radiology Mar 31, 2020

Long C, et al. - Researchers explored the diagnostic value of CT and real-time reverse-transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction (rRT-PCR) for COVID-19 pneumonia. A retrospective study was designed to recruit all patients with COVID-19 pneumonia suspicion, who were investigated by both CT and rRT-PCR at initial presentation. They further compared sensitivities of both tests. In addition to CT imaging findings, clinical and laboratory data were analyzed for patients with a final confirmed diagnosis. COVID-19 pneumonia was finally diagnosed in a total of 36 patients. It was considered that rRT-PCR may create initial false negative results. This study's findings suggest that patients with typical CT findings but negative rRT-PCR results should be isolated, and rRT-PCR should be repeated to avoid misdiagnosis.
