Bjornstad P, Nehus E, Jenkins T, et al. - Researchers investigated how Roux-en-Y gastric bypass affected health in 161 adolescents and 396 adults participating in two related but distinct studies. A significantly increased prevalence of elevated urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio (UACR) was observed prior to surgery among adolescents with preoperative type 2 diabetes vs adults (22.5 vs 9.0%). Adolescents and adults with type 2 diabetes differed in resolution of elevated UACR following surgery, with adolescents exhibiting a significantly earlier improvement following surgery. A significantly increased prevalence of UACR was observed prior to surgery among adolescents without preoperative type 2 diabetes vs adults (9.4 vs 4.5%), with no improvement occurring in either group postoperatively. A significantly increased prevalence of hyperfiltration was noted in adolescents with preoperative type 2 diabetes; this remained throughout the study period. However, hyperfiltration prevalence was similar among those without type 2 diabetes. Thus, adolescents with preoperative type 2 diabetes vs adults with preoperative type 2 diabetes showed earlier attenuation of elevated UACR in response to gastric bypass.
