Plager JH, Mancini CM, Fu X, et al. - Researchers undertook this retrospective cohort analysis to determine the influence of preoperative penicillin allergy assessment on perioperative cefazolin use among cardiac surgery patients. They noted that the likelihood of receiving the first-line peri-operative antibiotic was more among patients who underwent preoperative penicillin allergy evaluation. Following adjustment for potential confounders, higher odds of first-line perioperative antibiotic use were observed among patients who had a preoperative penicillin allergy evaluation. The receipt of first-line antibiotic prophylaxis, an important part of SSI risk reduction, in almost all cardiac surgery patients evaluated was ensured by combining penicillin allergy evaluation into routine preoperative care. There is a requirement for further attempts to increase access to preoperative allergy assessment.
