The predictive value of the platelet volume parameters in evaluation of varicocelectomy outcome in infertile patients

Andrologia Mar 25, 2020

Ghanem MA, et al. - In 64 infertile males with varicocele and 45 controls, researchers examined the value of platelet count and platelet volume indices, such as mean platelet volume (MPV), platelet distribution width (PDW) and plateletcrit (PCT), as a clinical biomarker. In addition, measurement of semen parameters, serum total testosterone, FSH and testicular volume was done before and at 6 months after varicocelectomy. In the patient group, there was a significant increase in mean MPV, PDW and PCT, while platelet count was lower, when compared with the control group; however no significant relationship was observed. A significant negative correlation was observed of MPV with total testosterone. After follow‐up of 37.1 ± 1.9 months, they noted a significant negative association between the preoperative MPV and varicocelectomy outcome in terms of semen values. Hence, suggesting the increase in MPV and low total testosterone in men with varicocele as a feature of high risk of infertility.
