Low colorectal cancer screening uptake and persistent disparities in an underserved urban population

Cancer Prevention Research Mar 24, 2020

Ni K, O'Connell K, Anand S, et al. - Given that despite a substantial rise in colorectal cancer screening in New York City in recent years, rates may not be completely captured by screening uptake measured by telephone surveys among underserved populations, therefore, researchers performed this study among previously unscreened patients in a large urban safety-net hospital in order to measure screening completion within 1 year of a primary care visit in these individuals, as well as to define sociodemographic and health-related predictors of screening. Findings revealed the existence of colorectal cancer screening disparities in this population. The overall screening uptake was low. Higher screening completion was reported in relation to Asian race, more primary care providers (PCP) visits, and higher area-level income. Morbid obesity, ever smoking, Elixhauser comorbidity index of 0, and having Medicaid/Medicare insurance were the factors that were related to remaining unscreened. Since a link was identified between more PCP visits and modestly higher screening completion at 1 year, additional community-level education as well as outreach may be important to increase colorectal cancer screening in underserved populations.
