Mortality and recurrent vascular events after first incident stroke: A 9-year community-based study of 0·5 million Chinese adults

The Lancet Global Health Mar 23, 2020

Chen Y, Wright N, Guo Y, et al. - In this population-based cohort study involving adults (aged 35 to 74 years) without disability who were enrolled to the China Kadoorie Biobank (CKB), researchers evaluated the short-term and long-term risk of recurrent stroke and mortality after a first stroke for each of the major pathological stroke types. A baseline survey was performed in ten geographical areas (five urban, five rural) in China, and candidates had clinical measurements recorded. Of 512,715 people in the CKB, 489,586 candidates without previous ischaemic heart disease and stroke at enrollment were involved, of whom 45,732 had a stroke during the study period. Among this population of Chinese adults, the risk of recurrence or death within 5 years was high after a first stroke. There is a need for urgent changes to secondary stroke prevention in China to reduce these risks.
