Slurink IAL, Groen K, Gotz HM, et al. - As people in the Netherlands may visit general practitioners (GPs) and sexual health centers [SHCs; also known as sexually transmitted infection (STI) clinics] for STI consultations, researchers investigated the contribution of GPs and SHCs to STI consultations in five Dutch regions with different urbanization levels. For this work, they retrieved data (2011–2016) of urogenital Chlamydia trachomatis testing from laboratories, aggregated by gender and age group (15–24 and 25–64 years). Findings suggest a wide variation in test rates and GP contribution between regions. A decrease in GP contribution was observed over time in Amsterdam (60–48%), Twente (79–61%), Maastricht (60–50%) and Northeast-Netherlands (82–77%), but not in Rotterdam (65–67%). Increases in SHC test rates and slight decreases in GP test rates resulted in decreases. Compared with SHCs, GPs performed more tests in women and those aged 25–64 years. Overall, there is an increase in SHC contribution yet GPs accounted for most STI consultations. Findings emphasize the essentiality of continued focus on good quality STI care at GPs, as rising demands for care can not be entirely covered by SHCs.
