Willington AJ, Cosgrove S, Davison P, et al. - Researchers determined the prevalence and characteristics of post-colonoscopy colorectal cancers (PCCRC) in a New Zealand regional center over a 10-year period. They cross-referenced 1,055 individuals with colorectal cancer with endoscopy coding records to identify individuals who had undergone a colonoscopy within the preceding 6-60 months in which cancer was not confirmed. In a New Zealand cohort, the prevalence of PCCRC was consistent with other international reports. It was noted that most individuals with PCCRC are older, female, and had early-stage disease. Interestingly, a significant proportion of individuals developed cancer within a colonic segment with existent pathology, indicating either missed lesions or incomplete polyp resection.
