Tai Chi for essential hypertension: A systematic review of randomized controlled trials

Current Hypertension Reports Mar 07, 2020

Zhong D, Li J, Yang H, et al. - From inception to January 1, 2020, a total of 9 databases were explored to test the safety and effectiveness of Tai Chi for essential hypertension (EH). In this systematic review, a total of 28 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) involving 2,937 candidates were ultimately involved. According to meta-analysis, Tai Chi exhibited a statistically significant difference in lowering systolic blood pressure (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP) compared with health education/no treatment, other exercise or antihypertensive drugs. Particularly for patients less than 50 years old, Tai Chi could be recommended as an adjuvant treatment for hypertension. However, this finding needs further study due to poor methodological quality of included RCTs and high heterogeneity.
