Alvarez-Bueno C, Cunha PG, Martinez-Vizcaino V, et al. - Researchers analyzed relevant studies identified from MEDLINE (via PubMed), Scopus, and WOS databases, to determine the strength of the cross-sectional and longitudinal link between arterial stiffness, ascertained by pulse-wave velocity, and cognitive function, discriminating between global cognition, executive functions, and memory. They also investigated the impact of demographic, clinical, and assessment features on this link. A negative link between arterial stiffness, measured using pulse-wave velocity, and cognition, particularly executive function, memory, and global cognition, was revealed in this study. This link appeared to be independent of demographic, clinical, and evaluation features. The findings are suggestive of the likely usefulness of pulse-wave velocity assessment as an instrument to recognize people carrying a high risk of cognitive decline or at early stages of cognitive decline, to perform interventions directed at reducing the progression to dementia.
