Assessment of factors associated with internal carotid injury in expanded endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery

JAMA Otolaryngology—Head & Neck Surgery Mar 06, 2020

AlQahtani A, London NR Castelnuovo P, et al. - In this multicenter quality improvement study analyzing 28 cases of internal carotid artery injury sustained during endoscopic endonasal skull base surgery, researchers evaluated the factors correlated with internal carotid artery (ICA) injury in an effort to reduce its occurrence. Data reported that the incidence of injury was 0.4%. According to results, human factors were linked to intraoperative ICA injuries, however, they were usually accompanied by other deficiencies. Such findings suggest that it is important to establish risk factors for avoiding these injuries. Preoperative planning and reducing ICA injury risk also seem important.
