Juul-Larsen HG, et al. - This study was carried out to evaluate patterns of multimorbidity in a Danish national cohort of acutely hospitalized medical patients aged 65 and older and to ascertain the correlation between these multimorbidities patterns with the healthcare utilization and complexity. A longitudinal cohort study was conducted to recruit a total of 129,900 (53% women) individuals. Researchers applied latent class analysis to explain patterns of multimorbidity based on 22 chronic conditions determined by Danish national registers. They applied a latent class regression to examine for differences in healthcare utilization and healthcare complexity among the patterns measured in the year leading up to the index admission. The results displayed that chronic conditions cluster together and that these patterns differ in healthcare utilization and complexity. It was considered that patterns of multimorbidity have the potential to be utilized in epidemiological studies of healthcare planning but should be validated in other population-based studies.
