Effect of chronic pancreatitis on complications and mortality in DM patients: A 10-year nationwide cohort study

Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Mar 04, 2020

Lin CH, Yeh NC, Wang JJ, et al. – Via performing a population-based cohort study, researchers examined the risk of diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), hyperglycemic hyperosmolar state (HHS), hypoglycemia, and long-term outcomes in patients with diabetes mellitus (DM) and chronic pancreatitis (CP). Using Taiwan’s National Health Insurance Research Database, they identified 506 patients with DM and newly diagnosed CP from 1999 to 2010, and created a control cohort that included 5,060 age- and sex-matched DM patients without CP from the same time period. According to findings, patients with DM and CP in Taiwan have a greater incidence of DKA, HHS, hypoglycemia, and mortality. Further attention is thus required in this population to prevent hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia.
