Preparedness and vulnerability of African countries against importations of COVID-19: A modelling study

The Lancet Feb 29, 2020

Gilbert M, Pullano G, Pinotti F, et al. – Researchers investigated the preparedness and vulnerability of African countries against the risk of importation of COVID-19. They analyzed data on the volume of air travel departing from airports in infected provinces of China that were directed to Africa to estimate the risk of importation per country. Each country’s capacity was ascertained to identify and respond to cases with two indicators: preparedness—utilizing the WHO International Health Regulations Monitoring and Evaluation Framework—and vulnerability, using the Infectious Disease Vulnerability Index. Overall, many African countries are increasing their preparedness to identify and cope with COVID-19 importations. The researchers noted that resources, intensified surveillance, and capacity building should be prioritized in moderate-risk countries with that might be ill-prepared to identify imported cases and to limit onward transmission.
