Association between retirement and mortality: working longer, living longer? A systematic review and meta-analysis

Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health Feb 28, 2020

Sewdas R, de Wind A, Stenholm S, et al. - To summarize available proof on the link between early and on-time retirement, vs continued working, and mortality, researchers undertook a systematic review and meta-analysis. They also determined if and to what extent gender, adjustment for demographics and previous health status impact this link. They identified relevant longitudinal studies via a systematic literature exploration. Overall 25 studies were included, 12 were analyzed in the meta-analysis. The link between retirement and mortality was influenced by adjustment for previous health and demographics. Findings revealed no link between early retirement and a higher risk of mortality. A higher risk of death was reported in correlation with on-time retirement, which possibly reflects the healthy worker effect. It is crucial to take into account data on previous health and demographics when examining the link between retirement and mortality to prevent biased results.
